19 Essential Food Blogs For Anyone On Whole30

Ali Maffucci / http://inspiralized.com/; Graphics by Morgan Johnson

Whether you’re a wellness aficionado who’s obsessed with healthy food blogs or a junk food lover who enjoys the occasional salad, chances are, you’ve heard of Whole30, a 30-day elimination diet that promises to benefit your digestive system with some seriously ascetic dietary changes.

Whole30 participants are asked to avoid grains, soy, dairy, most legumes (like beans and peanuts), added sugar, alcohol, and processed goods for the month they’re doing the program. So what is on the menu? Veggies, fruit, meat, fish, and healthy fats—like olive oil and (some) nuts.

The reasoning: According to the creators of Whole30, foods on the “banned” list are associated with food intolerances and other dietary problems. By staying away from these foods for 30 days, you’re giving your body a chance to “reset,” according to Whole30’s creators. Once you’re finished with the 30 days, you can slowly reintroduce these foods back into your life—all the while paying attention to how they make you feel. Think of it as a really strict, monthlong elimination diet, basically.

Now, for a quick caveat: SELF has reported at length that going on an elimination diet without first consulting a doctor is a Bad Idea. Elimination diets can be great diagnostic tools for helping people pinpoint (and avoid) specific irritants, but only when done under the care and supervision of a licensed professional. Why? If you don’t consult a doctor before (and while) trying an elimination diet—especially one that’s as strict as Whole30—you might not be getting all the nutrients you need. So if you’re thinking about participating in Whole30 at all, go ahead and call up your doctor. Talk the program through with them before banning cheese and peanut butter from your life for the next month. It’ll be worth it—I promise.

Let’s get back to business. If you’re planning to do a Whole30 (or if you’re in the midst of one right now), you’re probably finding that many of your go-to recipes aren’t compliant. Bummer, but there’s a silver lining: It’s an excuse to expand your cooking repertoire and experiment with ingredients you wouldn’t usually include on your grocery list.

“A great thing about the Whole30 from a dietitian’s perspective is the fact that it brings your attention to food quality while opening up your food world to a whole host of foods you may have never thought to include in your diet,” Jessica Beacom, R.D., tells SELF. On her blog, The Real Food Dietitians, Beacom has published tons of Whole30 recipes, hoping to inspire readers to try new foods and different cooking techniques.

And a quick perusal of the internet—or, you know, a quick skim through this article—will reveal to you that Beacom’s not the only one churning out Whole30 inspo. There are myriad healthy food blogs publishing Whole30-compliant recipes that are as delicious as they are healthy, so you can rest assured knowing your life won’t consist of meat-and-vegetables monotony for the month you’re doing the program.

Below, you’ll find 19 blogs that are chock full of yummy, Whole30-compliant recipes. These blogs have dozens (some even have hundreds!) of breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snack recipes to choose from. Most of them are so good that you might even keep cooking them after your Whole30 days are up.

This Italian Crockpot Chicken with Garlic and Basil is Pasta Night Comfort Food

crockpot chicken

Enjoying a delicious and protein-filled pasta night has never been easier thanks to this easy Italian crockpot chicken recipe with tomato sauce, garlic, and fresh basil. Simply put all the ingredients in a crockpot, leave it for the day, and return home to quick (and healthy!) comfort food.

This crockpot chicken recipe couldn’t be easier. All you’ll need are two frozen chicken breasts and a handful of other pantry ingredients. If your chicken is already thawed, have no fear! Simply cook the chicken in the crockpot for less time.

Choose certified organic chicken, if possible, or purchase chicken locally from a farmers market. Many labels on packaged chicken, such as sustainably farmed and humanely raised, are unverifiable and actually give no indication for how the chicken was raised. Choosing organic chicken means that the chicken was raised without antibiotics or hormones and complies with the USDA’s definition of organic practices.

Organic frozen chicken is combined with tomato sauce and hearty, Italian flavors in a crockpot. Choose plain organic tomato sauce, or one that hasn’t been sweetened or filled with preservatives and additives. Find glass jars or cardboard boxes of plain tomato sauce for this recipe at local health food stores or Whole Foods Market.

Balsamic vinegar is a delicious addition to this crockpot chicken recipe and adds a hint of acid and balance to the sauce. When slow cooked, balsamic vinegar sweetens and has a remarkable taste.

Whole cloves of garlic and onion infuse into the sauce to create a heavenly tasting (and smelling) sauce. When cooked low and slow, both garlic and onion sweeten and take on a caramelized, rich flavor.

After cooking for hours, this crockpot chicken is ready to go. Simply shred the chicken with a fork and serve with your favorite pasta noodles, baked spaghetti squash, or zucchini zoodles. Top with fresh basil and enjoy a hearty comfort classic!

15 Amazing Food Storage Containers That Aren’t Plastic Wrap

iStock/marekuliasz

After you spent the last hour whipping up a healthy dinner, just looking at the leftovers piled in pots and pans leaves you exhausted.

Clean up is the worst. Why can’t those leftovers magically put themselves away? You want to wrap those extra veggies, that half of an avocado, and that leftover pasta in the bowl in plastic wrap and go binge watch Netflix.

But even though the undeniable convenience of plastic wrap pulls at you, you know you won’t use it. (You’d give yourself a guilt complex for days.)

“More people are realizing every day that the plastic they throw away has long-lasting consequences for our oceans, our soil, our drinking water supply, and the health of our bodies and our planet,” says Sarah Kaeck, founder of Bee’s Wrap, which makes reusable organic cotton wrap as an alternative to plastic wrap. “If we don’t make changes to the amount of plastic we’re consuming as a society, we’re on track to see more plastic than fish in the oceans by 2050.”

One study found that of the 6.3 billion metric tons of plastic waste we’ve generated, only 9 percent has been recycled, only 12 percent has been incinerated, and the vast majority—79 percent—has built up in landfills or the natural environment.

And one-time use plastic wrap and baggies have much to do with that problem.

“Plastic wrap or sandwich baggies are used for such a short period of time. And they’re difficult (and impossible, in some places) to recycle,” Kaeck says. “Most end up in the trash. And then, despite being used for just a brief period in one’s home, they persist forever in our environment.”

So, What’s That Plastic Wrap Doing to Your Health?

Besides adding unnecessary waste to the world, storing food in single-use plastic means worrying about your health.

“I always knew that plastic was crappy for the environment. There’s no evidence to suggest it ever biodegrades. But until my wife and I had kids, I didn’t really consider what effect it had on our health,” says Steve Reble, Co-Owner of etee (Everything Touches Everything Else), which makes beeswax and essential oil reusable food wraps.

“A little bit of time and digging taught me that it may also leach toxins into our food, which means we’re ingesting it,” he says. “While we wait for 100 percent confirmation from the scientific community, I’d rather keep plastic off my boys’ food.”

Kaeck says she also felt concern about the health effects of plastic. “I was worried about the implications of plastic for both my family’s health and the health of the planet,” she says of why she wanted to eliminate plastic wrap from her kitchen.

Move over plastic wrap. So many better, more sustainable options exist. And many of these already live in your kitchen.

1. Mason jars

Oh, the mason jar. What can’t it do?

Mason jars work great as food storage containers. Whether you’re putting away the leftovers from dinner or storing dry goods, like rice, beans, and flour.

“We use a lot of mason jars and glass jars at home,” Kaeck says.“They last forever, are perfect for transporting beverages or soups, and serve all kinds of purposes in our kitchen.”

Reble also uses mason jars regularly. “My favourite (We’re Canadian. We add extra ‘u’s whenever we can.), plastic-free food storage—aside from etee—hands down is the glass mason jar,” he says. “Every single day I make a giant batch of smoothies and split it up into multiple jars for the fam to share. I’d be lost without my mason jars.”

2. Leftover jars from other food

Guess what? You don’t need to buy anything new to get awesome food storage containers.

Head out to your recycling bin and grab your extra glass jars from pickles, olives, pasta sauce, and salsa.

These glass jars work perfectly to store leftovers, homemade soups, and drinks.

3. Glass food storage containers

Recycle your plastic food storage containers and never look back.

You have a way better option: Glass.

Glass food storage containers last longer than plastic. You don’t have to worry about any potential contamination from your food touching plastic. And you can easily reheat food in the same container. What’s not to love?

4. Stainless steel food storage containers

Keep your food extra cold with reusable stainless steel food storage containers.

They’re great for packing lunches, like sandwiches, salads, and cut fruit. And these handy stainless steel food storage containers from U-Konserve even include dividers.

5. Two plates or bowls

Sandwich your leftovers between two plates or two bowls and stick them in the fridge.

This method is especially useful if you want to make up a plate of food to store for later. Grab it out of the fridge, take off the top plate, heat it up, and enjoy.

6. Wax paper

If you already have wax paper in your kitchen, use it as a better alternative to plastic wrap.

Clean off the wax paper and reuse it multiple times. But when it comes to the end of its life, you have limited options.

Recycling wax paper is a no-no because it’s coated in, well, wax. And wax doesn’t mix well with the water-based recycling process.

And, you can drop wax paper in your compost pile, but only if you have a soy-based, biodegradable wax paper. (You don’t want paraffin wax in your compost. Yuck!)

7. Aluminum foil

While you don’t want to use aluminum foil all the time for food storage (that’s not very sustainable), this shiny kitchen staple works well in a pinch.

Rinse off any food residue and you can reuse a piece of aluminum foil multiple times. And some curbside recycling programs even accept it. (Hint: Clean it off first.)

8. Paper bags

Use paper bags to store fragile produce in the fridge, like berries, dates, and figs. Paper bags also work well to ripen produce. Speed up ripening by placing avocados, tomatoes, and pears in paper bags and set them on the counter.

Paper bags aren’t super reusable but you can compost them.

9. Dish towels

Need to keep a salad cool while you finish making dinner? Covering a plate or a bowl in a dish towel works great for short-term food storage.

10. Cheesecloth

Besides using cheesecloth to make your own ghee butter or cold brew coffee, you can also use it to store foods that need a little ventilation, like certain produce and herbs. And cheese, of course.

11. Cloth napkins

Wrap up sandwiches, fruits and veggies, and pretty much any food that’s not liquid, in a cloth napkin for quick storage.

12. Fabric bowl covers

You already have a bunch of bowls. So, why buy more food storage containers?

Use bowls and fabric bowl covers for simple food storage. Cover berries, pasta, a salad, and whatever else with a fabric bowl cover and you’re good to go.

Tons of fabric bowl cover options are for sale on Etsy. If you’re crafty, you can even sew your own.

13. Silicone suction lids

Silicone suction lids make food storage easy. Besides also being super fun to use. (Who didn’t play with suction cups when they were kids?)

These food covers come in a variety of sizes to fit different containers.

14. Silicone storage bags

Need to store and freeze liquids, like soups and stocks? Reusable silicone storage bags are a good bet. And you can clean them in the dishwasher. Easy peasy.

Look for silicone storage bags made from food grade silicone. So they don’t contain any nasty fillers, coatings, BPA, PVC, or phthalates.

15. Reusable food wrap

Perhaps the ultimate plastic wrap alternative is reusable food wraps.

Made from organic cotton infused with beeswax and tree resin, reusable food wraps are a lovely way to store food. Just rinse and reuse. Over and over.

They come in varying sizes, so you can use them to pack a sandwich, wrap up half of an onion, and cover a casserole.

They also help keep food fresh. And can last up to a year.

The best part? When they’ve seen a little too much love, you can toss them in your compost pile.

The Reusable Food Wrap Brands We Love

Choose sustainable food storage that starts from the earth and returns to it. Artisans today are bringing back a lost tradition of using natural materials to create convenient food storage wrappings. Naturally biodegradable, reusable, and convenient. We want these in our kitchens.

Bee’s Wrap

Bee’s Wrap food storage wraps are handmade in Vermont from organic cotton infused with beeswax, organic jojoba oil, and tree resin.

“We’ve designed these wraps to be used and reused, and they typically last for about a year with regular use in the kitchen,” Kaeck says. “And unlike plastic wrap, Bee’s Wrap is fully biodegradable. So when a wrap is ready to be retired from regular use, it can be composted (or cut up and used as a natural fire starter for your grill or fireplace.)”

And they not only store food, they help it last longer. “It keeps cheese and bread fresh; it’s perfect for wrapping up veggies and fruit; and it makes it easy to carry snacks and meals on the go in a lightweight, eco-friendly package,” Keyack says.

The pretty squares come in unique, fun designs. Each size has its own distinct pattern, so you can easily grab the size you need.

etee

Reusable food wraps are part of a plastic-free revolution, according to Steve Reble, Co-Owner of etee, which stands for Everything Touches Everything Else. The company handmakes reusable food wraps in Toronto.

“Etee wraps are a great alternative because they keep most food, such as organic produce, snacks, sandwiches, and leftovers, as fresh as plastic without the side effects,” Reble says.

The company’s food wraps use 10 parts beeswax to one part non-GMO soy wax and tree resin to form a tacky but not overly sticky seal. “Etee food wraps use organic and whole ingredients, and have a slightly different formula than other traditional beeswax food wraps,” he says. “This formula makes our wraps more pliable and tacky, which makes for an amazing seal when wrapping produce or topping a bowl.”

Etee crates its colorful food wraps with ribbed edging from organic cotton muslin fabric with non-toxic, eco-friendly dyes.

Besides smelling amazing, added organic jojoba oils and cinnamon and clove essential oils help keep food fresh. The food wraps aren’t recommended for raw meats or for long-term freezer use.

15 Insta-Worthy Kitchen Items That Professional Food Bloggers and Stylists Swear By

Graphic by Cristina Cianci

Hands up if you’ve ever made a point to snap a picture of a particularly beautiful plate of food before you dig in. Yes? Me too. Actually, I’d say I take pictures of my food almost every day—sometimes that means catching a simple oatmeal breakfast in good morning light; other times it means forcing a friend to help stage a pizza cheese pull in public.

The thing is, even after years of amateur food photography, I can’t seem to even come close to recreating the perfect, scroll-stopping professional food photos that I see on my feed, in magazines, and on my favorite food blogs and websites. Specific lighting, strategically prepared food, and expensive camera equipment (all pretty inaccessible for most of us) are greatly responsible for this, but another key factor? Props. And, good news: replacing run-of-the-mill plates, bowls, glasses, and napkins with prettier ones is a realistic way to bring your food pics to the next level.

I asked 11 food bloggers and professional food stylists to share their absolute favorite props for food styling. Below are 16 gorgeous kitchen products, at a variety of price points, that these experts love to use in their food photos. And hey, even if you have no interest in photographing your meals, they all look even better IRL.

2

Natural 100% Linen Napkins

Neutral napkins are something I use all the time. Since I cook very colorful food (lots of veggies!), I keep my props and styling simple and fresh to really let the food pop. I like to keep my linens basic – neutrals, simple, and naturally textured. I love these linens from World Market, they’re my go-to. Here they are next to my Chicken Zucchini Noodle Soup.

Opinel Paring Knife

I love my small yellow Opinel paring knife. Even when I’m not using it as a prop, I bring it to set and use it as a tool. In photos, it adds a clean, beautiful pop of color without taking over. Plus, it looks even better with a little wear (which mine definitely has).

13 Insta-Worthy Pool Floats Inspired by Your Favorite Foods

Getty/Luxy Images

My Twitter feed was up in arms this week when many of the people I follow realized they could buy a massive, millennial pink pool float with a built-in champagne cooler. The queen daybed-sized float, manufactured by a brand called Funboy, was the stuff of Instagram dreams, and I’m sure I wasn’t the only one trying to track down a nearby pool so I’d have an excuse to purchase the thing.

Of course, it only took a few minutes for me to remember that I live in what Alicia Keys (and many others) has called a concrete jungle; the only pools near me can be found on swanky rooftops or in exclusive clubs. In other words, I wasn’t dipping my toes in a pool—or getting my hands on this float—any time soon.

But as I perused search engine results for pools in New York City, I quickly stumbled upon a treasure: Food- and drink-inspired pool floats are literally everywhere. Funboy is one of the few companies to manufacture a pool float with a built-in wine cooler, but tons of other places have taken to designing floats that look like the wine you’d put in said cooler. Some others have made floats that look like fruit, or popsicles, or pie—the list goes on.

Whether you’re one of the lucky ones who can hop into a pool whenever they choose, or if you, like me, can’t help but drool over every summer-related thing you see, scroll down. You’ll find 13 food-inspired pool floats. Because donut and bacon floats already feel a little played out, we’re highlighting inflatables that feature your favorite healthy foods. (Plus a few others, because what’s summer without rosé and margaritas?)

So get scrolling. Because food-inspired pool floats are available far and wide, and that’s as good an excuse as any to get a head start on summer shopping.

19 Woman-Owned Food Brands to Add to Your Grocery List

Graphic by Cristina Cianci

Today, International Women’s Day, is a time to shine extra light on complex and layered social issues. The thing is, working towards gender parity and female empowerment is a year-round thing, and there are a number of ways that each of us can push for progress.

As a food editor (and food lover), something I feel strongly about is supporting woman-owned food brands and businesses—because, while women are still largely responsible for grocery shopping and home cooking, we’re also still underrepresented as leaders in the food industry. I’m always thrilled to eat at female chef-driven restaurants, and I make a point to buy from woman-owned food brands whenever I can. These are small things, sure, but they’re something. And think about it: Buying groceries or choosing a restaurant are things you probably do several times a week. Heck, if you snack as much as I do, these choices come into play multiple times a day!

If you’re looking for small, everyday ways to support women all year long, look out for these 19 woman-owned food products the next time you go grocery shopping. Many of the products are SELF editor favorites and all are widely available in stores and/or for purchase online. Many are also Women’s Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC)-certified woman-owned brands, which means that this third-party organization has vetted that the companies are majority owned, managed, and controlled by a woman or women. Most importantly, they’re all delicious.

Chloe Kim’s Food Tweets While Winning Olympic Gold Are So Relatable It Hurts

Loic Venance/AFP/Getty Images

Olympic snowboarder Chloe Kim may have just won the gold medal in the halfpipe competition in Pyeongchang, South Korea, at the 2018 Winter Olympics, but on social media, she’s just like any other 17-year-old. While completely dominating in her events for Team USA, Chloe, like so many of us non-Olympians, was thinking about food.

On Monday, Chloe tweeted about craving ice cream. Not only was she at the Olympics, she was literally in the middle of the women’s halfpipe qualifications. “Could be down for some ice cream rn,” she wrote. The responses flooded in right away, with one fan asking, “Aren’t you competing right now?” Her response? A simple “yes…” Now, the Olympian is back at it again, this time tweeting about a breakfast sandwich.

Again, she took to Twitter mid-competition: “Wish I finished my breakfast sandwich but my stubborn self decided not to and now I’m getting hangry.” Nonetheless, after the tweet, Chloe went on to become the youngest-ever gold medalist in the halfpipe event.

According to an ESPN reporter, when asked why she was tweeting during the competition, Chloe said, as any teenager would,”Like, what else are you supposed to do?”

Besides ice cream and breakfast sandwiches, Chloe tweeted about eating two churros over the weekend, which not only satisfied her sweet tooth but apparently also helped calm her nerves. Clearly, she has a winning strategy. In 2016, Chloe became the first person under the age of 16 to win three gold medals at an X Games and the first woman to land back-to-back 1080 spins in a snowboarding competition. Not to mention, she was the second person ever to receive a perfect, 100-point score. Seriously impressive sports credentials aside, Chloe’s Twitter game is totally on point.

6 Genius Cooking Tricks From a Vegan Soul Food Chef

Sweet Potato Cinnamon Rolls

Sidney Bensimon

Before I became a vegan food blogger and cookbook author, I was growing up in Georgia, eating a diet light on fruits and vegetables and heavy on Chick-fil-A. I went vegan as an adult for ethical reasons, and I love experimenting with recipes that re-create the soul food flavors of my childhood without animal products. I share many of these recipes on my food blog and also recently published a cookbook, Sweet Potato Soul: 100 Easy Vegan Recipes for the Southern Flavors of Smoke, Sugar, Spice, and Soul.

One of the most popular misconceptions I’ve noticed is that many people think that soul food and veganism are pretty incompatible. I understand that, but I have to disagree. Soul food cooking is all about optimizing flavor and texture. What we love and crave are the spices, the sauces, and the preparation style. Soul food is about seasonings (smoked paprika, Old Bay, celery, hot sauce) and preparations (smoking, frying, grilling, baking). You don’t need meat and cheese for amazing soul food, and you don’t even need mock meat and fake cheese—you can get outstanding results by applying classic soul food seasonings and cooking methods to vegan ingredients like fruits, vegetables, grains, beans, and mushrooms.

Below are my best tips I’ve learned throughout the years for flavorful, soul-filled vegan cooking.

1. Spice things up with Creole seasoning, celery seed, Old Bay, cayenne, and more.

Sidney Bensimon

Down South, we don’t skimp on flavor. Luckily, spices are vegan, so it’s easy to achieve that Southern flavor profile without meat. Stock your spice cabinet with essentials like Creole or Cajun seasoning, celery seed, smoked paprika, Old Bay, cayenne pepper, bay leaves, hot sauce, and onion powder. Two of my favorite tasty soul food recipes are New Orleans–Style Red Beans & Rice, spiced with smoked paprika, bay leaves, and Cajun seasoning; and Low Country Grits (pictured above), flavored with Creole seasoning and Old Bay.

2. Fire up the grill for charred flavor.

Sweet Potato Soul

Grilling is essential to Southern cooking. We love firing up the grill from spring to fall, and even sometimes in the winter. A hot grill gives vegetables and plant-based foods a delicious charred flavor and richness that you can’t get from baking or roasting. Try grilling my Sweet Potato Burgers or Beet Black Bean Burgers (pictured above).

3. Embrace liquid smoke, smoked paprika, and a smoker to replicate the savory, umami-rich flavor of smoked pork.

Sidney Bensimon

Think you can’t have satisfying smoky food without pork? Think again! A raw slab of pig flesh doesn’t have much charm on its own—it’s the hours spent in a smoker that make it delicious. The same smoking process works on plants and makes them just as succulent and delicious as meat. Try smoking eggplant, carrots, mushrooms, or tofu in your smoker. If you don’t have a smoker, you can achieve that amazing smoky flavor by using liquid smoke or smoked paprika! Try my Crispy Eggplant Bacon (pictured above) and see for yourself.

4. When you fry, dredge food in flax, cornstarch, and nondairy milk.

Sweet Potato Soul

Fried food is an important part of soul food culture: think fried chicken, hush puppies, and fried green tomatoes. Replacing the egg and dairy in a dredge (that’s the coating for fried food) is easy when you use ground flaxseed and cornstarch in place of the egg, and nondairy milk instead of regular. Replacing the meat is easy too! My favorite vegan swaps are cauliflower or oyster mushrooms for fried chicken. Make sure to give my Vegan “Chicken” and Waffles (pictured above) a try.

5. Fill up on beans.

Sweet Potato Soul

Everyday soul food isn’t complete without beans. Kidney beans, butter beans (aka lima beans), and black-eyed peas are staples in most Southern diets. Beans are full of fiber and protein, and they add texture and flavor to any dish. Plus, they’re versatile and inexpensive. Hoppin’ John (pictured above) is a classic Southern black-eyed pea and rice dish that will leave you full, satisfied, and feeling truly nourished. I recommend buying dry or canned beans in bulk and cooking with them frequently.

6. Sweet potatoes, always!

Sidney Bensimon

Sweet potatoes have been my favorite food for longer than I can remember, and they play a huge role in soul food. I love their flavor and texture, but I also love their versatility in cooking. You can add mashed sweet potatoes to some baked goods in place of eggs, or to replace some of the oil. You can also use less added sugar when baking with sweet potatoes because they have so much sugar naturally. My Sweet Potato Pecan Cinnamon Rolls (pictured above) make the perfect breakfast treat.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup "fed" sourdough starter
  • 1 1/2 cups lukewarm water
  • 2 teaspoons instant yeast
  • 2 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 5 cups King Arthur Unbleached All-Purpose Flour

Instructions

  1. Combine all of the ingredients, kneading to form a smooth dough.
  2. Allow the dough to rise, in a lightly greased, covered bowl, until it’s doubled in size, about 90 minutes.
  3. Gently divide the dough in half; it’ll deflate somewhat.
  4. Gently shape the dough into two oval loaves; or, for longer loaves, two 10″ to 11″ logs. Place the loaves on a lightly greased or parchment-lined baking sheet. Cover and let rise until very puffy, about 1 hour. Towards the end of the rising time, preheat the oven to 425°F.
  5. Spray the loaves with lukewarm water.
  6. Make two fairly deep diagonal slashes in each; a serrated bread knife, wielded firmly, works well here.
  7. Bake the bread for 25 to 30 minutes, until it’s a very deep golden brown. Remove it from the oven, and cool on a rack.

When she reached the first hills of the Italic Mountains

A wonderful serenity has taken possession of my entire soul, like these sweet mornings of spring which I enjoy with my whole heart. I am alone, and feel the charm of existence in this spot, which was created for the bliss of souls like mine. I am so happy, my dear friend, so absorbed in the exquisite.

For the happiest life, days should be rigorously planned, nights left open to chance

I should be incapable of drawing a single stroke at the present moment; and yet I feel that I never was a greater artist than now. When, while the lovely valley teems with vapour around me, and the meridian sun strikes the upper surface of the impenetrable foliage of my trees, and but a few stray gleams steal into the inner sanctuary, I throw myself down among the tall grass by the trickling stream; and, as I lie close to the earth, a thousand unknown plants are noticed by me.

It showed a lady fitted out with a fur hat and fur boa who sat upright, raising a heavy fur muff that covered the whole of her lower arm towards the viewer. Gregor then turned to look out the window at the dull weather. She packed her seven versalia, put her initial into the belt and made herself on the way.

One morning, when Gregor Samsa woke from troubled dreams, he found himself transformed in his bed into a horrible vermin. He lay on his armour-like back, and if he lifted his head a little he could see his brown belly, slightly domed and divided by arches into stiff sections.
